China's MIIT Releases August 2019 Telecom Statistics; 4G Penetration Nears 79%

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its August 2019 national telecom industry statistics. China's total number of mobile service subscribers rose by nearly 4.9 mln during the month to reach approximately 1.596 bln.

As of the end of August 2019, China's total number of 4G mobile service subscribers reached almost 1.257 bln, comprising 78.8% of the country's total mobile service subscribers, while the total 3G subscriber base rose to over 119 mln, or 7.5% of the total mobile subscriber base.

As of the end of August 2019, China's penetration of mobile phone internet users among mobile internet users was 82.3%.

In calculating the figures for change since the end of 2018, the MIIT used the data from its 2018 annual report.

In calculating the fixed-line telephone and mobile subscriber penetration rates in the table above, the MIIT used China's 2018 year-end population size.
