Global Competitiveness a Criteria for China's Mobile TV Standard

Sina Tech, 11/07/07

The Standardization Administration of China (SAC) has formed three panels to conduct a range of 33 indoor and outdoor tests for China's mobile TV standard. International standards are not being considered for the mobile TV standard accreditation process, which explicitly requires the use of self-developed intellectual property. However, the potential global competitiveness of a given standard will be an important consideration factor during assessment.

The SAC has already formed a market requirements group to assess whether or not there is a demand for mobile TV. The group has representatives from various ministries and broadcasters, as well as from the 5 big telecom operators (China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK), China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH), China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK), China Netcom (NYSE: CN; 0906.HK) and China Satcom, who unanimously agree that the market has huge potential.
