Rumor: China Telecom Starts Commercial Trials of CDMA+Wi-Fi

Informed sources recently revealed that China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has already issued a notice on "Trial Commercial Services of CDMA1X + Wi-Fi" in several cities. This document claims the company will start trial commercial wireless broadband services using its "C+W" system immediately. Users who spend more than RMB 50 each month in mobile services can apply to the company for access. After verifying the user, China Telecom will send an SMS to them with a login and password that can be used to gain access to the ChinaNet broadband network through any C+W Wi-Fi hotspot. The theoretical speed of the network speed is 54 Mbps.

China Telecom spent RMB 200 mln in the first stage of Wi-Fi network construction. It plans to deploy as many as 100,000 hot spots in 30 cities including Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuhan and Nanchang.
