Baofeng Loses Copyright Infringement Lawsuit

Sina Tech, 3/24/09

Beijing Haidian District People's Court has found Chinese online video-sharing platform Baofeng guilty of copyright infringement for the unauthorized broadcast of the film "The Art Of Seduction," whose domestic broadcast rights are owned by digital entertainment publishing company Zoke Culture. This is the first copyright lawsuit faced by Baofeng since transitioning from being solely a media player developer. The court ordered Baofeng to immediately cease all infringing broadcasts, and compensate Zoke Culture RMB 30,000 in damages.

Baofeng provided search and link services for the film for its partner, Chinese online video-sharing platform Tudou, placing advertisements on its video player interface and sharing revenue with Tudou. Zoke Culture had initially requested RMB 100,000 in compensation.
