China Unicom Opens Data Center in Tianjin

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) held the opening ceremony for its international data center in Tianjin's Huayuan area yesterday. The center covers 18,000 sq. meters and has 180 Gbps of outgoing bandwidth. The center provides data center outsourcing services to domestic and large-scale foreign industry and online IT businesses, offering server rack rentals, individually customized server rooms, disaster recovery and back-ups, real-time kernel-based virtual machines (KVM), network security, server rentals and other services. Currently Tencent (0700.HK), Taobao, Sina (Nasdaq: SINA), The9 (Nasdaq: NCTY) and Shanda (Nasdaq: SNDA) are among the center's clientele.

A Tianjin Unicom spokesperson said the center currently can run a maximum of 20,000 to 30,000 servers, and users in Tianjin can experience experience 30% faster load times when browsing websites hosted at the center, such as Taobao and Shanda.
