Rumor: Shanda to Acquire Social Game Developer RockYou

Sohu IT, 4/30/10

Online gaming company Shanda Interactive (Nasdaq: SNDA) reportedly plans to acquire U.S. social game developer RockYou for a nine-digit USD figure, according to an industry source. The two companies are said to have had multiple discussions on the matter.

The source said Shanda will use its ample financial resources to focus on deployment in the overseas market this year, and among possible unlisted targets, RockYou has the most investment potential and highest value.

According to the source, negotiations between Shanda and RockYou are being facilitated by a shared investor, Japan's Softbank. The acquisition would be in line with Softbank's global strategy, and as Softbank believes that a RockYou IPO is unlikely, the best solution would be an acquisition by a Softbank-invested firm.

So far neither company has commented on the rumors.
