Microsoft Settles Piracy Dispute with CITIC Kington

Microsoft has reached a settlement with Hangzhou-based CITIC Kington Securities in a dispute over use of unlicensed Microsoft software. CITIC Kington agreed to buy RMB 3.23 mln worth of licensed Microsoft software, while Microsoft will cooperate with CITIC Kington in the areas of software asset management and optimized IT management.

Microsoft senior IPR director Yu Weidong said that Microsoft had filed suit against CITIC Kington at the Hangzhou Intermediate People's Court in October 2009, accusing CITIC Kington of illegally using 9 types of over 1,000 copies of its software. Yu said that in addition to buying legal copies of Microsoft's software, CITIC Kington has also agreed to pay certain compensation, the amount of which Yu declined to reveal.
