QVOD to Sell Smart-Device-to-TV Wireless Interface by Year-End
Netease Tech, 11/22/12
Victor Wang, CEO of Shenzhen-based media player developer and operator QVOD Technology, revealed on November 21 that the company has completed three rounds of testing for its "QVOD Dapingmu" ("QVOD Big Screen") smart device-to-TV set-top box (STB) ahead of a late-December launch. The company will initially put 50,000 STBs on sale simultaneously in China and overseas markets including Japan, Thailand, and Mexico, and has set a sales target of 5 mln units for 2013, half of which it hopes to sell overseas.
Wang said that QVOD Dapingmu would be priced comparably to Beijing-based Android device maker Xiaomi's RMB 399 "Xiaomi Hezi" ("Xiaomi Box") STB. The QVOD Dapingmu will differ from the Xiaomi Hezi in its "peripheral" design. "Peripherals can't do anything when they're disconnected from TVs and mobile phones except act as a mobile storage device, so the policy and market risks are very low," Wang said. "But STBs aren't truly peripherals, as they can be used independently."
QVOD has partnered with third-party application developers to pre-install video and BBS applications with the device, and will not block video pre-roll ads. Besides device sales, QVOD will derive revenues from profit sharing agreements with third-party vertical application developers, Wang said, adding that the company hopes to see its hardware business become profitable in 2013.
