Sina Tech, 8/07/13
China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has awarded TD-LTE terminal contracts to 16 manufacturers, among 57 applicant manufactures, in the company's H1 2013 TD-LTE terminal tender. The 16 manufacturer figure matches the number of manufacturers awarded contracts in China Mobile's H2 2012 TD-LTE tender, although the size of the tender has grown from 34,700 units to 207,000.
Telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell (ASB) garnered only one contract from 10 submitted terminal models, while Tianjin-based Primemobi Group won one contract out of 14 submitted models. Samsung and Sony were the only foreign companies to win contracts in the current tender, winning two TD-LTE smartphone contracts apiece. Korean electronics manufacturer LG and Chinese manufacturers Hisense (600060.SH), TCL Communication Technology (2618.HK), New Postcom Equipment, and Coship were not awarded any contracts.
US chipset makers Qualcomm and Marvell made up a combined 80% of procured chipsets, and were used in 15 (Qualcomm) and 5 (Marvell) of China Mobile's procured TD-LTE models, respectively. 4 procured terminals use chipsets made by Huawei's HiSilicon Technologies, while one is manufactured by ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ).
In H2 2013, China Mobile will kick off tenders for 800,000 TD-LTE terminal units, bringing the company's 2013 TD-LTE terminal procurement to over 1 mln units.
