China's February 2024 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 33% YoY, 55% MoM

A total of 14.26 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in February 2024, down 32.9% YoY and 55.1% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in February, 12.53 mln, or 87.9%, were 5G handsets, 1.72 mln, or 12.1%, were 4G handsets, and roughly 5,000 were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively; accordingly, the 3G/2G figure we have provided here is calculated using CAICT's total, 5G, and 4G figures, and may include a rounding error of up to 10,000 units.
In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2024, a total of 46.04 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, up 14.6% YoY. Of this total, 38.70 mln, or 84.1%, were 5G handsets, 7.27 mln, or 15.8%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 70,000, or 0.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 11.84 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in February, down 32.5% YoY and 54.9% MoM, accounting for 83.1% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 14.04 mln units, down 31.3% YoY and 52.4% MoM, accounting for 98.5% of total handsets shipped in China in February.
In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2024, 38.08 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, up 38.7% YoY, accounting for 82.7% of total handset shipments. During the same 2-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 43.56 mln, or 94.6%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of February, 21 new handset models were released in China, down 25.0% YoY, and 27.6% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 17, or 81.0%, were 5G models, 4, or 19.0%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models; 19, or 90.5%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 19, or 90.5%, were smartphone models.
In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2024, 50 new handset models were released in China, up 22.0% YoY; of this total, 26, or 52.0%, were 5G models, 24, or 48.0%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Feb 2024, 45, or 90.0%, were from domestic brands, and 36, or 72.0%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
