ZTE Unveils New Smartphone Brand

TechWeb, 10/31/12

On October 31, Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) announced the launch of a new high-end smartphone brand, "Nubia," in Beijing. The brand will be operated independently as a subsidiary of ZTE, and will mark the first time ZTE has announced a new brand outside of its own label. The first Nubia handset will feature a high-definition 5" display, a quad-core CPU, and a design from Italian designer Stefano Giovannoni. It is slated to go on sale in late December.

Ni Fei, GM for the Nubia brand, said that Nubia plans to focus efforts on opening up markets through a combination of online sales and offline retail experience stores that will initially open up in first- and second-tier cities around China. After the Nubia brand goes into operation in China, the company will set its sights on expansion into the global market.
